About us

Creating an orchestra which can perform to the highest international standards in configurations from small chamber ensemble to full symphony orchestra should be enough to make English Classical Players a rare phenomenon but the additional range of services we can provide make the company unique.

The orchestra remains at the heart of our work though, and its continued development our most important priority.   It was formed by Jonathan Brett (Artistic Director) and Alison Kelly (Leader) in 1990 and its regular members include some of London’s finest musicians.   The launch concert was given at the Banqueting House in Whitehall on June 19th, 1990 to a standing ovation and led to a flood of offers of engagements.  The main works played were recorded the same week.

Since that time the orchestra has developed steadily and from its beginnings as a chamber orchestra now also appears regularly as a full symphony orchestra.  It has toured widely in the UK as well as appearing in the major London venues and broadcasting for the BBC and Classic FM.   The worldwide success of the first recording, Mozart’s Symphony No 40 and Schubert’s Fifth for Linn Records, generated an international profile and an increasing number of invitations for foreign tours.

In 1996 English Classical Players was invited to become the resident orchestra at Watford Colosseum, a hall of exceptional quality and one of the most well-known and sought-after recording venues in the world.   The opportunity to work regularly in one of the UK's finest halls for orchestral music allowed the orchestra to develop both its technical and musical qualities to the maximum, as well as to build a strong base of public support.
